Pour souligner le 200e anniversaire de Cartier, né le 6 septembre 1814 à Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, David Ledoyen de Parcs Canada présentera la causerie Un homme et son œuvre. Ce sera l’occasion d’en apprendre davantage sur les réalisations de ce père de la Confédération qui fut surnommé le lion du Québec.
Cette causerie est offerte en français et sera accompagnée d’une période de questions bilingue. S’ensuivra un concert qui mettra en valeur les œuvres lyriques des Mélodistes canadiens-français.
Pour le plaisir de nos visiteurs, le baryton Marc Boucher et le pianiste Olivier Godin, de renommée internationale, interpréteront des œuvres composées au Québec au 19e siècle. Ce répertoire, qui mérite une redécouverte, est présenté grâce à la collaboration du Centre de musique canadienne au Québec.
Un gâteau d’anniversaire sera servi à 15 h.

En 1863, George-Étienne Cartier reçoit de ses électeurs un surtout en argent réalisé par l’orfèvre montréalais Robert Hendery, d’après un dessin de Louis-Victor Fréret. La qualité de ce centre de table d’apparat démontre l’expertise et la vitalité de la production d’orfèvrerie à Montréal au 19e siècle, tout en étant un bel exemple de l’esthétique victorienne alors en vogue.
L’historienne de l’art Joanne Chagnon expliquera les détails et la signification de cette œuvre d’art et établira des liens avec d’autres représentations de George-Étienne Cartier, dont le célèbre monument qui se trouve au pied du Mont-Royal à Montréal.

CONFÉRENCES ET ANIMATION MUSICALE À MONTRÉAL

L’historien Alastair Sweeny, auteur d’une biographie de sir George-Étienne Cartier soulignera le rôle fondamental mais souvent méconnu de Cartier dans l’établissement de la confédération et comment la réalisation de sa vision de l’union des colonies est cohérente avec les réformes alors en œuvre. Cette conférence est offerte en anglais et sera suivie d’une période de questions bilingue.

Cartier à la conférence de Québec, l’architecte d’un pays. Brigitte Violette, historienne à ParcsCanada, expliquera l’importance des conférences de Charlottetown et de Québec. Elle mettra surtout en lumière le rôle que Cartier y a joué et quelle vision politique l’animait. Cette conférence est offerte en français et sera suivie d’une période de questions bilingue.
ANIMATION MUSICALE – 11 et 12 OCTOBRE 2014, 13 H
Les conférences des historiens seront suivies par de l’animation musicale dans le cadre distingué du salon victorien de la maison Cartier. Le baryton Marc Boucher et le pianiste Olivier Godin charmeront leur auditoire avec des pièces du répertoire des Mélodistes canadien-français de la fin du 19e siècle, qu’ils pourront commenter. Cette expérience musicale originale est possible grâce à la collaboration du Centre de musique canadienne au Québec.

To celebrate Cartier’s 200th birthday, who was born in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu on September 6, 1814, Parks Canada’s David Ledoyen will present the “Un homme et son œuvre” (A man and his work) discussion. It will be the perfect opportunity to learn more about the achievements of this Father of Confederation, whose nickname was “the Lion of Quebec”. This discussion will be offered in French only and will be followed by a bilingual question period and a concert that will showcase the lyrical works of French-Canadian composers.
To delight our visitors, the world-renowned baritone Marc Boucher and pianist Olivier Godin will perform works composed in Quebec in the 19th century. This repertoire, which deserves to be rediscovered, is presented thanks to a collaboration with the Canadian Music Centre in Quebec.

A RECORD OF RECOGNITION – SIR GEORGE ÉTIENNE CARTIER’S CENTERPIECE
TALK
OCTOBER 5 2014, 1 p.m.
In 1863, George-Étienne Cartier received a silver centrepiece from his constituents. It was made by the Montreal silversmith Robert Hendery and based on a design by Louis-Victor Fréret. The high quality of this ceremonial centrepiece shows the expertise and vitality of the silversmith’s trade in 19th century Montreal, while serving as a fine example of the Victorian aesthetic that was in fashion at the time.
The art historian Joanne Chagnon will give a critical analysis of this work of art’s details and meaning in addition to drawing links between it and other representations of George-Étienne Cartier, including the well-known monument at the base of Mount Royal, in Montreal.

THE QUÉBEC CONFERENCE
CONFERENCES AND MUSIC PERFORMANCES UN MONTRÉAL
OCTOBER 11 2014, 1 p.m.
The historian Alastair Sweeny, author of a biography of Sir George-Étienne Cartier, will highlight the fundamental, but often unsung role that Cartier played in Confederation, and how the fulfillment of his vision to unite the colonies was consistent with the reforms underway at the time. This talk will be offered in English and will be followed by a bilingual question period.
OCTOBER 12 2014, 1 p.m.
“Cartier at the Quebec Conference: the Nation Builder”. Brigitte Violette, a Parks Canada historian, will analyze the importance of the Charlottetown and Quebec conferences. In particular, she will highlight the role that Cartier played in these conferences and the political vision that inspired him. This talk will be offered in French and will be followed by a bilingual question period.
MUSICAL PERFORMANCES – OCTOBER 11-12 2014, 1 p.m.
The historians’ talks will be followed by musical performances in the Cartier house’s distinguished Victorian drawing room. Baritone Marc Boucher and pianist Olivier Godin will delight the audience with a repertoire of pieces by French-Canadian composers from the late 19th century, as well as a personal commentary. This unique musical experience has been made possible thanks to a collaboration with the Canadian Music Centre in Quebec.
